Micah Updates

  • Micah is talking more and says: Mama, wah-wah (water), nay-nay (nursing), yes (yeh or yith) and guppy, guppy, guppy (we have no idea what that means, but he's been saying it a lot.)  He also has signs for all done, food and diaper change.
  • When he's done eating, he frantically make his version of the all done sign (shaking both hands) and pulls off his bib.  If he's not wearing a bib he attempts to pull off his shirt.
  • He blows on anything that he thinks is hot, from food to the stove itself.
  • He enjoys eating kleenex, bits of the sidewalk, flowers, cat food, chapstick and anything with zinc oxide.
  • He's also adventurous when it comes to real food and has recently enjoyed mango jalapeno chicken sausage with kale and polenta, octopus in chipotle sauce and beets with goat cheese.
  • Micah has learned to climb and can climb onto the bed, the coffee table and the breakfast nook benches.
  • He loves bathes, especially drinking as much of the bath water as possible.
  • He applauds his own accomplishments as well as other happy events like one of the cats entering the room.

Micah Loves Potatoes...

french fried potatoes, baked potatoes, hashed brown potatoes, country fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweet potato fries, freedom fries, tater tots, potatoes in soup, potatoes and beans, potatoes and chicken, potato, potato, potato!  We think it may be his Russian heritage, but this boy sure loves those potatoes!  But, to be frank, he loves to eat, and eats with gusto a wide variety of fine foods from sushi to tacos.  A foodie in the making; parent modeling at its best!

A born leader...

So we went to our first Music Together class today (parent/baby music & movement class). Highlights included:
->When we arrived, all the other kids were sitting docilely in their parents laps in a circle around a large drum. Micah assessed the situation and beelined for the drum. Within minutes all the other kids had joined him in an impromptu drumming circle.
->Micah made friends with a nine-month old little girl, and they fed each other their rhythm sticks and used each other's heads as drums.
->Micah displayed his natural sense of rhythm by bobbing his head to the beat and grinning ear to ear throughout class.

Micah's Latest Tricks

This past few days have been busy ones for Micah...very busy!

He's mastered the knee crawl and is on the move from the moment he wakes. He pops up  like some cute, evil animated creature and starts scurrying about the house in search of things to discover and explore.  When faced with an obstacle such as mommy's sandal or...a cat... he reverts back to the army crawl, powers over, pulls his knees back under and is on his way. Now, he enjoys scanning a room upon entry for the most dangerous items, thrusting himself out of our arms toward the floor and scuttling off to trouble.  He helps us in the kitchen by opening, emptying and shutting the broiler repeatedly, in the office by unplugging and chewing electrical cords or going after thumb tacks or small chokables.  He slides head first down the step between the kitchen and the living room, reverses up and starts again.  He climbs up onto the coffee table and tears all the pages out of our magazines and books.

In addition to his mad mobility:
  • Micah's involved in a love affair with our VCR.   Abby and I are verifiable techniphobes and still have an 11in TV/VCR combo entertainment system.  It's just the perfect height for Micah to pull up to and the VCR slot is just the perfect size for Micah's little hand. "I love this thing! Do you SEE all the things that can go in here?  My hand!  This book!  Do you see all the things it can do?!
  • And so, his next new skill, understanding the word "stop!". (Following it is another matter...)
  • Micah said bye bye yesterday, or more accurately "dye dye..." (We don't take it personally.)
  • After much practice clapping onto the back of his left hand, he managed to turn it over and now claps open and to open hand. He crawls over and invites us to never ending games of patty cake and "yay, Micah!"
  • Micah's begun to dance, a head-bobbing, torso jiving, full bodied expression of pleasure in music!

get this show on the road

Well, we obviously have not done as well as we intended at making posts on this thing, but I've been thinking about it lately, and thought I should at least make a few brief notes from the past couple weeks.

Recent Micah highlights and low lights:

- 4/12 Micah shares his first rice cake with Abby and hence forth proceeds to share every well slobbered toy and mushed up food that pleases him.
- 4/17-4/23 RotoVirus- MAJOR vomiting and diarrhea resulting in an ER trip directly from Passover Seder and a 6 hour "oral re-hydration challenge" in the doctors office. 10 cc's of Pedialyte every 10 minutes. Good times. He would doze off at minute 7 or 8 and have to be woken up again to get his next dose. Then he would cry and sign to nurse, which he wasn't allowed to do.
-4/26 Micah pretends the sippy cup handle is a phone and shouts "ello!" into it. Now, every block, remote and boxy object is a phone for endless conversations of "ello! ello? ello!?"
